Yesterday, Tuesday 17th December, 2019; Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) cargo services from Syokimau to Suswa. The depot will boost freight handling ability thereby relieving pressure on the port of Mombasa through the country and across the East African region.
The launched services enhance Standard Gauge Railway freight operations from Mombasa to Naivasha Inland Container Depot, taking transit cargo deeper into the country’s hinterland. This comes 2 months after the launch of the Nairobi to Naicasha Standard Gauge Railway passenger service.
The launch event was graced by a number of dignities including Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Chinese State Councilor Wang Yong, also the special envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“We mark the commencement of the freight train services to the Naivasha Inland Container Depot; thus making an unequivocal statement that we as a people are truly ready to ascend,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta while launching the cargo services.
President Kenyatta went further and said, “We equally remain hopeful that other economic and commercial ventures will be established along the line, which together will trigger the creation of productive employment, and in the process reduce poverty and inequality across the whole country.”
Finally President Uhuru Kenyatta said the government is committed to improving infrastructure across the country to make Kenya preferred destination for investors.
